Sisters of Holy Rosary

By Fr. Petros Mwale (Mzuzu Diocese)

INTRODUCTION
“Fr. Petros, who are Sisters of the Holy Rosary? I feel like being called to a religious life, how can I join them?” – Anonymous

RESPONSE
Dear anonymous, God has a plan for everyone and following God’s plan will lead to true happiness. Allow the Lord to lead you and have trust that He will only desire what is best for you. It is then that you will find true happiness and fulfillment in life. Religious life is a call to join a congregation for love of God and building up of the Kingdom of God. A sister, brother, monk, or nun serves God and his people in a unique way through prayer and service. I hope this is what you feel inside your inner soul.

CANONICAL STATUS
The Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Rosary has a DIOCESAN RIGHT (one that is under the Canonical authority of a Bishop in a particular diocese. They are not bound to work or live in that diocese alone, but the bishop who approved them is their canonical Major Superior and not the Pope. PONTIFICAL RIGHT – a local bishop has no authority in the internal affairs of the congregation, he has no voice or vote on their constitution and how they interpret or apply their rule. He has no authority over any ministry that they perform or run, which is not a diocesan ministry, but the Pope has. Examples: St. John of God Brothers and M.I.C sisters in the Catholic Diocese of Mzuzu Diocese).

ORIGIN
The Congregation was founded in 1951 by Monsignor Marcel Saint Denis 1947-1957, Prefect Apostolic of Northern Nyasa. (Excursus incursus: The Prefecture Apostolic of Northern Nyasa was erected on 18th May (Decree 8th May 1947). It was a division of the Vicariate Apostolic of Nyasa. On 17th January 1961, it was elevated to a status of a diocese – Mzuzu Diocese. The late Right Rev. Marcel St. Denis was the first elected Prefect Apostolic by the Holy See).

Under the supervision and help of Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception (MIC) from Quebec, Canada, Sisters of the Holy Rosary got established.

The Charism of this Congregation is “Proclaiming the Kingdom of God in Love.”
