RADIO TIGABANE

Organisation’s Legitimacy

Radio Tigabane is Local radio broadcasting under regional community of interest license issued by MACRA and operates under the patronage of the catholic diocese of Mzuzu. Radio Tigabane was officially launched on air in December 2005.

The radio station situated in the growing City of Mzuzu in the northern region of Malawi, the station broadcasts to the wider part of the northern region covering the districts of Rumphi, Nkhata-Bay, Likoma, Mzimba ,Mzuzu City and surrounding areas, it also reaches Kasungu, Ntchisi and Dowa districts in the Central Region.

Considering the fact that the northern region of Malawi has been lagging behind in social-economic development compared to the central and southern regions, one of the major aims of Radio Tigabane has been to facilitate development in the region through developmental radio programs.

This strategy is in line with the main goal of the station and the diocese of Mzuzu, which is “to carry out a holistic evangelization that takes care of the spiritual as well as social-economic needs of the urban as well as the rural population in the region.”

In order implement the main goal the radio station has programs that do not discriminate against people based on their religious creed, gender, age or ethnicity.

However, it has some specific programs deliberately designed to promote participation of people living with HIV/AIDS, the youth, women, girls and people with disabilities whose voices are ignored or not amplified.

In order to address the socio economic needs of the people, Radio Tigabane designed and established a fully-fledged development and marketing department with a full time projects and marketing manager.

The development and marketing department operates as a channel of communication for dissemination of developmental messages in cooperation with different religious and non-religious bodies, non-governmental organizations (NGO’S) as well as government departments.

The development and marketing department works closely with the program production department and facilitates the production and broadcasting of targeted programs while creating developmental and empowerment opportunities for the marginalized and disadvantaged social groups like women and girls.

Radio Tigabane broadcasts in Tumbuka, the indigenous language widely spoken in the northern region of Malawi. It is the only local radio station whose broadcasts cover the major towns and wider parts of the region. With its community needs and participatory focused programming.

Radio Tigabane has penetrated deep into the rural areas that the name Tigabane has become a household name among the listeners.

The radio station has Board of Governors appointed by the Bishop of the Diocese of Mzuzu. The board of governors are responsible for the policy and general administration of the radio station.

The radio station has the constitution and financial policy which guide the management to run the affairs of the radio station. The constitution provides that the Radio Station management will run the day to day activities and the Board will be responsible for providing policy direction as stated. The management is accountable to the Board and the Board is accountable to the Bishop of the Diocese.
