St Joseph Catholic parish is one of the seventeen parishes in Mzuzu diocese. It is located right at the centre of Nkhata bay, one of the lake districts of Malawi. It also covers the island district of Likoma plus another small island of Chizumulo. It opened its doors in 1952 by Monsignor St Denis (White Fathers). It has a total number of 46 churches and a Christian population of 5,324. Being a lake shore parish most of its people are fishermen and earn their living by fishing, though on a small scale level. Others are farmers who mainly grow cassava for domestic use. Some people work in Vizara rubber plantations and Kawalazi Tea Estates. The rest, but very few in number, are government workers and business people. Their staple food is Cassava flour i.e. Kondowole. The language of the people is Tonga.

The sources of income for the parish are Sunday Collection, Tithe, Sales from the crops which parishioners give annually.
