Msgr. Nguyen OFM Conv. Joins Faithful at St Thérèse Katete Parish to Open Mission Month

Fr. Dinh Anh Nhue Nguyen OFM Conv, Secretary General of the Pontifical Missionary Union, joined the faithful at St Thérèse Katete Parish on 1 October 2026 for the opening of Mission Month, marking the beginning of Malawi’s activities towards the Centenary of World Mission Sunday.

The Catholic Church in Malawi officially opened the 2026 Mission Month on 1 October at St Thérèse Katete Parish in the Diocese of Mzuzu, with the presence of Msgr. Dinh Anh Nhue Nguyen, Secretary General of the Pontifical Missionary Union.
The opening Eucharistic celebration was presided over by Very Rev. Fr. Isaac John Katumbi, Vicar General of the Diocese of Mzuzu. Msgr. Nguyen joined priests, religious men and women, and the faithful for the celebration, which marked the beginning of a month dedicated to prayer, missionary awareness and evangelisation.
Msgr. Nguyen is in Malawi as part of a special missionary visit connected with the Centenary of World Mission Sunday. His presence at Katete brought an international missionary dimension to the opening and strengthened the connection between the Church in Malawi and the wider missionary Church.
The celebration at St Thérèse Katete Parish officially launched the Mission Month activities leading to the National Centenary Celebration of World Mission Sunday, held at Mzuzu Stadium under the theme “One in Christ, United in Mission.”
In his capacity as Vicar General, Fr. Katumbi led the local Church in prayer as the faithful were encouraged to recognise that missionary responsibility belongs to the whole Church. The opening celebration therefore provided an opportunity for Catholics to renew their commitment to evangelisation, prayer and service.
Msgr. Nguyen's participation also highlighted the importance of collaboration between local Churches and the universal Church in advancing the missionary mandate. His visit forms part of a wider programme of missionary animation and formation taking place in Malawi.
The opening at St Thérèse Katete Parish was therefore an important starting point for the month's missionary activities, bringing together clergy, religious and lay faithful in preparation for the historic Centenary of World Mission Sunday.
