Every curia is to have a chancellor whose principal task is to see to it that the acts (books) of the curia are gathered, arranged and safeguarded. In the Roman Catholic Church a chancellor is the chief record-keeper of a Diocese; traditionally a priest, the Chancellor may also be a baptized Catholic lay person, male or female, who may also be assigned other duties by the Diocesan Bishop.
