Development Commission

Background 
Catholic Development Commission (CADECOM-MZUZU) is one of the development arms of the 8 Catholic Dioceses in Malawi, covering districts of Rumphi, Nkhatabay, Likoma Island and Mzimba and extends to northern parts of Kasungu and Nkhotakota Districts in the Central Region. The Diocese has 19 parishes.


CADECOM-MZUZU operations hover around the Diocese’s main strategic goal of “Ensuring spiritual, social and economic transformation and development of individuals, families and communities.” This goes hand in hand with her mission of “Proclaiming the gospel through pastoral care and social-economic development so that people’s lives are transformed to be good disciples of Jesus Christ and stewards of God’s creation.”


ACTIVE PROJECTS
Currently, CADECOM- MZUZU has the following running projects.


  1. TRANSFORM PROJECT
    Donor:
    NCA. DCA Act Alliance
    Main Goal: To strengthen local food systems and demonstrate a sustainable improvement of food and nutrition security, resilience to climate change and income in the rural areas of Malawi
    Location: Mzimba and Rumphi districts with sub-offices at Mzimba boma, Nkhamenya and Rumphi boma.


Project Staffing: CADECOM Coordinator, 1 Project Manager, 1 MEAL Officer, 1 Agribusiness Officer, 15
Agronomists, 1 Driver and 2 Guards.


  1. A+ PROJECT
    Donor:
    Caritas Australia through Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM)
    Main Goal: To support marginal communities in Malawi, enhance their quality of life by adopting a strength based approach (SBA) and through improved food security and access to water, sanitation and hygiene services.
    Location: Rumphi and Mzimba.
    Project Staffing: CADECOM Coordinator, 1 Project Zone Manager, 2 Field Officers, 1 Driver

  2. IMPROVED LIVELIHOODS THROUGH SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF LAND AND
    FOREST RESOURCES.
    Donor:
    Misean Cara through St. Patrick’s Missionary Society (SPMS)
    Main Goal: Through the TOTs the project aims at training community members in the production of energy cooking stoves, bee keeping, Village Savings, Loans & Investment (VSLs) as a way of improving the livelihoods and income levels in the Parish communities.
    Location: All the 19 parishes of the Diocese of Mzuzu.
    Project staffing: CADECOM Coordinator, Project Officer and several volunteers (TOTs) across the Diocese

  3. TRANSFORMING SEED SYSTEMS TO RESPOND TO BEAN VARIETY DEMAND THROUGH
    MULTI-STAKEHOLDER PLATFORMS (MSP) IN MALAWI

    Donor: CIAT
    Main Goal: Develop strategies and interventions that will assist smallholder farmers adopt different bean varieties through use of field days, Participatory Variety Selection and demonstration plots.
    Location: Mzimba in Emfeni, Champhira and Manyamula EPA’s
    Project Staffing: CADECOM Coordinator, 1 Project Manager, 10 Agronomists

  4. FAO VSL CONSULTANCY
    Donor:
    FAO
    Main Goal: Strengthen overall capacity of farmers and extension workers about VSL methodology,
    complementing community based skills in selection, planning and management of income generating activities.
    Location: Mzimba in Emfeni area
    Project Staffing:CADECOM Coordinator, 1 Project officer, 1 MEAL officer, 1 Field officer

  5. MODEL FARMING TRAINING CENTRE
    Donor:
    Light into Framing Enterprise (LIFE)
    Main Goal: Act as a learning centre for communities through sustainable smart agricultural practices. The project aims at creating a way for communities to learn, grow and develop together into the best they can in the circumstances they are in.
    Location: In the heart of Bishop’s Katoto Forest
    Project Staffing: 1 LIFE Coordinator, 2 Farm keepers.
