On 24th May, the Solemnity of Pentecost, in the year 2015, the third of Pope Francis’ Pontificate he issued an Encyclical entitled Laudato si (Praise be to you) on the care of our common home. In response to the invitation, in 2018 the Catholic Diocese of Mzuzu instituted an “Environment and Ecology Committee‟ (EEC) to explore ways the message of the encyclical could be actualised in our local context. In the beginning, with the help of a small charity in Ireland called LIFE (Light into Farming Enterprise), a “Model Farming Training Centre‟ was established which (through the services of CADECOM and funded by Misean Cara and LIFE) has trained Trainer of Trainers (TOTs) in all parishes of Mzuzu Diocese to care for the environment and promote integral ecology.
The next stage of the dream was utilising the 192 acres of land where this LIFE (a Model Farming Training Centre) is situated. The EEC realised that the land in the middle of the City of Mzuzu has far greater potential to promote environmental issues and integral ecology not only for the city of Mzuzu but the entire diocese. The attached document takes up this task of making the most of the 192 acres to flesh out Laudato Si for the benefit of all peoples of all persuasions within the borders of Mzuzu Diocese and even beyond in a bigger picture called Integrated Ecology Centre (IEC).
